Monster on the road

The night was warm and I was uncomfortable enough to wake up at 3 am. It made me feel uneasy, so I went out on my balcony. Half asleep, blurry eyed, I looked out and saw this menacing thing sitting there. It was big, and it was waiting.

It got even scarier, no cars were parked on my road. I've lived here over 30 years, cars are always parked. There's never a time they are not!

The silence grew, I thought of Simon and Garfunkel, but that didn't help—because there were no sounds. Even the silence was absent.

Maybe I hadn't woken up, and this was a nightmare. Normally there would be a car or two sliding past on the nearby main road, heading east for some foul purpose—but there was nothing.

The air was heavy, full of moisture, yet not foggy. It too held an indeterminate presence. I decided it must be some kind of weird dream and if I went back to bed in it, I'd wake up and that would be that.
